EDITING TIP FOR MAY
DID YOU KNOW...?
One reason for using an editor to check your writing is to ensure that
it conforms to accepted practice regarding grammar, punctuation and style.
Below are some points that you should be aware of in your writing:
-
"Pacific Ocean" is capitalized, but not "the ocean"
-
Commas and periods are placed before quotation marks, not after them
-
The numbers up to ten are spelled out, whereas numerals are used from 11
on (according to most Style Guides)
-
Foreign words should be in italics, with the gloss (translation)
in quotation marks
-
The phrase "that is" is preceded by a semicolon and followed by a comma
-
Commas cannot be used to join together two independent clauses (e.g. It's
sunny outside, I think I'll go for a walk.); use a semicolon instead
If you haven't got the time to fiddle with all these little details, consider
