Chilliwack school trustees choose Jared Mumford as board chair – Chilliwack Progress

The president and vice-president of the Chilliwack Board of Education swapped places in a directors vote on Tuesday afternoon.

Director Jared Mumord was elected chairman of the board by secret ballot and director Willow Reichelt is now vice chairman, with both trading positions running until 2022.

In accordance with school district policy, board elections are held annually no later than the second Tuesday in December for the president and vice-president at a regular special meeting of the board.

The meeting, which is expected to be public, did not take place in person and was not broadcast live due to technical difficulties, according to the school district.

Superintendent Rohan Arul-pragasam briefed Progress of the results of the meeting.

The board also chose representatives and alternatives to the BC Public School Employers’ Association (BCPSEA) and the BC School Trustees Association (BCSTA).

Administrator Carin Bondar has been appointed BCPSEA Provincial Councilor with Mumford as Alternate, and Administrator David Swankey has been appointed BCSTA Provincial Councilor with Reichelt as his replacement.

Trustees Heather Maahs, Darrell Furgason and Barry Neufeld do not hold any of the voted positions.

Reichelt, who is now vice-president, was first elected president on October 30, 2020, a vote spurred by Dan Coulter’s departure from the board of directors following the provincial election where he was chosen as MP for Chilliwack.

In that vote, Mumford had nominated Reichelt while Furgason nominated Maahs, but Reichelt won the vote.

Mumford was then nominated for the vice-presidency, as was Maahs, but she declined and Mumford therefore won by acclamation.

Maahs then declined the nominations for the BCPSEA Provincial Councilor and Alternate, and for the Alternate BCSTA.
