Stack’s Bowers Galleries are delighted to present a newly discovered 1794 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar at their official auction for the ANA World’s Fair of Money 2021 in August. Discovered in an accumulation by a merchant in the south of the UK over 25 years ago, this coin is a newcomer to the census of known examples and was only recently authenticated with the help of Stack’s Bowers Galleries. He subsequently received the AU-55 rating from the NGC and the CAC approval, ranking him among the most important survivors of this historic problem.
Authorized by the Law of April 2, 1792, the Flowing Hair of 1794 was among the largest silver dollars ever minted by the United States Mint, serving as a prototype for the unit on which the American monetary system would be based. It was prized by collectors from its inception and was honored with the # 3 ranking in the fifth edition (2019) of the influential reference 100 Greatest American Coins by Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth. With a mintage of only 1,758 coins, the 1794 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar is a coin whose legends are made.
Stack’s Bowers Galleries has auctioned a 1794 silver dollar nearly 40 times over the past two decades, including the finest and most valuable specimens known. These offers include six separate sales for over $ 1 million, including the

Writing in the 2010 edition of
The Flowing Hair Silver Dollars of 1794: A Historical and Demographic Census Study
, Martin Logies of the Cardinal Collection Educational Foundation represents a surviving population of 140 to 150 copies in all grades. Although not listed in the census of Logies, this new discovery would be classified as CC # 10 on the basis of this list. This remarkable piece is very well struck and preserved for the show, with exceptional definition of Liberty’s hair and stars on the obverse and almost complete denticulation on both sides. The fields remain smooth with subtle bursts of satin luster. Only eight coins were further finely graded by NGC and only eight were CAC approved across all departments, underscoring the truly impressive quality of this coin.
Any 1794 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar is an extremely important numismatic find, and possession of even a low-quality or altered copy is a hallmark of an important collection. This incredible AU-55 (NGC) CAC specimen is surely intended for an advanced collector of silver dollars or ancient American artifacts.
This new find is one of the few world-class American coins to feature in the official Stack’s Bowers Galleries auction for the ANA World’s Fair of Money in August, accompanying the finest known dollar of 1804, a quarter original from 1827/3, a Mint State 1796 Stars quarter eagle, and many other treasures.
