Keola Lindsey, administrator of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, resigned on Tuesday. The agency announced Lindsey’s intention on Monday.

According to the OHA, Lindsey cited focusing on the well-being of her family in a resignation letter submitted to the board. He was elected to his first term on the Board of Directors in November 2020.

The board plans to meet this month to take steps to fill Lindsey’s vacant seat. He will have 60 days to appoint a new trustee for the island of Hawaii, who will serve until the general election in November.

“My colleagues and I offer our sincere mahalo to Administrator Lindsey for his service to the lahui and wish nothing but the best for him and his ohana,” OHA Board Chair Carmen “Hulu” said. Lindsey in a statement.

Keola Lindsey, a graduate of the University of Hawaii at Manoa and the Hawaii Preparatory Academy, had worked as the OHA’s chief counsel and first head of the Papahanaumokuakea program before being elected to the board. On the board, he served as vice chair of the beneficiary advocacy and empowerment committee and led the authorized interaction group, which handled audits.

The agency also said in a press release that he was an advocate for Native Hawaiians affected by the 2021 Waimea fires and for the protection of the islands’ natural and cultural resources.
