Transoxiana (sometimes rendered as Transoxania) is Greek for "beyond the Oxus" and was the term used by Greek geographers to refer to the area on the far side of the Oxus River (the Amu Darya), from a Western perspective. Although it is commonly used to refer just to the area between the Amu Darya and the Syr Darya (i.e. roughly modern Uzbekistan), my use of it in the title above is meant to cover all of Central Asia. This vast and fascinating part of the world comprises the five ex-Soviet Central Asian republics of Kazakstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, along with Xinjiang (Eastern Turkestan), a province in northwestern China (see the flags below; note that the flag of Eastern Turkestan is not an official flag approved by the Chinese government, as it represents the aspirations of the indigenous people of Eastern Turkestan for independence). Many would also include Afghanistan, as well as possibly Mongolia and parts of Iran, in Central Asia.
